Congratulations, Recruit. The newest members of your Dart Frog Army have officially arrived. Right now, they may not look particularly intimidating. Mostly a head, a tail, and an appetite. But these tiny aquatic recruits are preparing to complete one of the most remarkable transformations in the amphibian world. Over the coming weeks, you'll watch them develop back legs, deploy their front legs, absorb their tails, leave the water, and eventually report for duty as fully terrestrial froglets. Much of the tadpole-care information I use at Frog Command has come through hands-on experience, trial and error, raising my own tadpoles, and continuing to learn from other experienced keepers and breeders. I've also learned a great deal from respected resources in the dart frog community, including FrogDaddy, NC Dart Frogs, and podcasts such as AmphibiCast and FrogRack. As with almost everything in dart frog keeping, there can be more than one successful way to accomplish the mission. This guide covers the methods that have worked for me and the lessons I've picked up along the way. Your primary mission is simple: KEEP THE WATER CLEAN. FEED CAREFULLY. WATCH DEVELOPMENT. KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO GET OUT OF THE POOL. Welcome to tadpole operations.
PHASE 1 — ARRIVAL & ACCLIMATION
When your tadpoles arrive, don't be alarmed if they're quiet or inactive at first. Shipping is a major deployment for a tiny animal. Place the tadpole cups somewhere with a stable room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heating vents, windows, and other locations that experience rapid temperature swings. For many commonly kept dart frog tadpoles, temperatures in roughly the upper 60s to low 70s°F can work well. The mission isn't to chase a perfect number every fifteen minutes. Stability matters. Give the recruits some time to settle in before making major changes to their environment.
PHASE 2 — CHOOSING THE TADPOLE BARRACKS
There is more than one successful way to raise dart frog tadpoles, but individual deli cups are one of the simplest systems and the method I recommend for many new keepers. Each tadpole gets its own barracks. That makes it much easier to monitor growth, feeding, development, waste, and water quality. For very small tadpoles, I generally start with approximately 1 inch or so of water. As the tadpole grows and becomes a stronger swimmer, the water depth can gradually be increased. For larger, established tadpoles, I generally work toward roughly 3–4 inches of water. There is no tactical advantage to dropping a tiny recruit into an Olympic-size swimming pool on Day One. Start shallow. Increase the operating area as the recruit grows.
Some keepers use divided containers, tackle-box-style systems, or dedicated tadpole racks. These systems can be extremely efficient and save considerable space. But remember one important Frog Command rule: LESS WATER MEANS LESS ROOM FOR ERROR. Small volumes of water can foul quickly from leftover food and waste. Compact systems can work very well, but they demand closer observation.
Some dart frog tadpoles can be raised communally in larger containers or aquariums. But communal raising is species dependent. Phyllobates tadpoles, for example, are generally much more tolerant of communal grow-out than some other dart frog species. Other species may compete, injure one another, or become cannibalistic. Before combining recruits: KNOW YOUR SPECIES. When you're uncertain, individual housing is the safer deployment plan.
PHASE 3 — WATER QUALITY: PROTECT THE AO
A tadpole spends virtually its entire early life surrounded by water. That means the water isn't just something inside the enclosure. The water IS the Area of Operations. Poor water quality can become a serious problem very quickly, especially in small containers. Use appropriately prepared tadpole water. Spring water can be used. RO or distilled water should generally be appropriately remineralized rather than used completely mineral-free. Avoid untreated tap water containing chlorine or chloramine.
PHASE 4 — RATIONS
This is where new keepers sometimes accidentally love their tadpoles to death. DO NOT OVERFEED. A tadpole is tiny. Its stomach is tiny. Its ability to turn leftover food into disgusting water, however, is absolutely combat capable. Use a quality tadpole food and feed in small, controlled amounts. You want enough food for the tadpole to eat without leaving a pile of decomposing rations sitting on the bottom of the cup. If yesterday's chow is still sitting there, don't send in reinforcements. Remove the leftovers first.
FROG COMMAND RECOMMENDED RATIONS
One tadpole food I recommend is TadDaddy Tadpole Powder from FrogDaddy. FrogDaddy's current directions call for a very small amount and emphasize adjusting the ration based on how much the tadpole actually consumes. Their guidance lists feeding roughly 3–6 times per week or as needed and specifically warns against overfeeding. That matches the Frog Command approach: OBSERVE. ADJUST. DON'T OVERFEED. Another tadpole food I recommend is HF Advanced Tadpole Food, developed by Houston Frogs and available through FrogDaddy. FrogDaddy's current directions describe a small pellet food and recommend 1 scoop (20 mg) every other day for tadpoles 1–30 days old and 2 scoops (40 mg) every other day for tadpoles 31–90 days old. Uneaten food should be siphoned out after 24 hours, and the next ration reduced if the tadpole cannot finish it. The instructions are not: DEPLOY MAXIMUM RATIONS AND HOPE FOR THE BEST. PHASE 5 — WATCHING THE TRANSFORMATION
Now comes one of the best parts of tadpole operations. Over the next several weeks, your recruit will begin transforming. Development speed varies depending on species, genetics, temperature, nutrition, and other factors. The basic progression looks something like this: TADPOLE → BACK LEGS → LARGER BACK LEGS → FRONT LEGS → TAIL ABSORPTION → FROGLET Back legs normally arrive first. Then one day you'll look into the cup and think: WHERE DID THOSE FRONT LEGS COME FROM? Congratulations. Your recruit just entered the most important stage of the mission.
THE TILTED-CUP METHOD
Once all four legs are out, the tilted-cup method is one of my favorite ways to manage the transition. First, reduce the water until only a shallow amount remains—just enough for the froglet to submerge its body. Then gently tilt the deli cup. The water collects toward one side while the opposite side creates a gradual route toward dry ground. Your recruit now has: AQUATIC ZONE → TRANSITION ZONE → LANDING ZONE No climbing wall. No deep-water escape course. No amphibious drown-proofing test. Just an easy exit route.
PHASE 6 — WE HAVE LANDFALL
Eventually, the recruit will crawl out of the water. It may still have part of its tail. THAT'S NORMAL. Don't automatically put the froglet back into the water because you think it deployed onto land too early. A froglet may leave the water with some tail remaining and finish absorbing it after landfall. At this point, move into froglet grow-out operations.
BUILDING THE FROGLET GROW-OUT AO
A newly morphed froglet does not need a massive display vivarium immediately. In many cases, a smaller secure grow-out enclosure makes it easier to monitor the recruit and confirm that it is eating. The objective is not impressive landscaping. The objective is observation, access to food, security, and stable conditions.
BASIC FROGLET GROW-OUT LOADOUT
- Plenty of leaf litter
- Cork or other hiding areas
- Live moss or suitable plants if desired
- A healthy springtail population
- High humidity with good ventilation
- Appropriately sized fruit flies once established
- Secure ventilation and escape-proof openings
- Easy access to food
- No deep standing water
FROG COMMAND TADPOLE INSPECTION
BEFORE LEAVING THE TADPOLE STATION, CHECK:
- WATER: Clean and stable?
- DEPTH: Appropriate for the tadpole's current size and development?
- RATIONS: Small amount with no old food decomposing?
- TEMPERATURE: Stable and protected from direct sunlight?
- DEVELOPMENT: Any new legs appearing?
- ALL LEGS OUT: Has the water been reduced dramatically?
- EXIT ROUTE: Can the metamorph easily reach dry land?

Raising dart frog tadpoles can look intimidating the first time. It doesn't need to be. Don't chase perfection. Keep the water clean. Don't overfeed. Increase water depth gradually as the tadpole grows. Observe your recruits every day. And when all four legs are out: GO SHALLOW. OPEN THE EXIT ROUTE. PREPARE FOR LANDFALL. Your tadpole handles most of the transformation itself. Your mission is to provide the right conditions while nature does the heavy lifting.
